Racket Business - Publisher's Notes for August, 2025

Remembering Don Petrine - New Partnerships - RacquetX - INTENNSE - Webinar Watch - Things that make me go hmmm - Racket Retail Business for sale in LA - Updates - Shout-Outs

Hello, dear readers, friends, and racquet sports enthusiasts.

I hope July was a good month for you.

Went through my usual three phases in July: Wimbledon anticipation, Wimbledon matches, and Wimbledon withdrawal. Ever since I was fortunate enough to experience the Championship with wonderful VIP treatment by one of their members last year (Thank you, Commish!), I am hooked on this tournament.

Miami Connections

Whenever I’m in Miami, I try to have lunch with one of the industry leaders I admire and follow, Victor Bergonzoli, CEO and Co-Founder of SportsEdTV. (And not only because a Swiss and a German have a lot to talk about!)

Victor and Co-Founder Robert Mazzuchelli (and, of course, John Eagleton and Aleksandar "Sasha" Jovicic) have built a truly global online platform that provides “free access to high-quality sports instruction and education for athletes, coaches, and parents.” Victor also happens to be on the Conga Sports Advisory Board, and I love to listen to his suggestions based on over 30 years of experience in the sports & media industry.

While in Miami, I also met with another hugely successful entrepreneur: Andre Robelo, CEO and Founder of Playbypoint. Please read my write-up about him and his company in the Tech section.

Pro Tennis

I usually refrain from writing about pro tennis because I know that I’m not really too qualified to do so. However, let me share an article I found on LinkedIn by Omega Media, a Digital Marketing Agency tailored for sports clubs: “Next in Line: The New Players Reshaping Tennis, and Its Brand Value.” Great analysis about pro tennis entering a new cycle. “A generation of players is stepping up, young, competitive, and deeply connected to the media behaviors of today’s audiences. They're not only setting new standards on court; they’re also reshaping how brands build cultural relevance through sport.” A good read!

Future of Racquet Sports

Racket Business Guest Writer and Racquet Sports Entrepreneur Susan Nardi came back from her camps in Scandinavia this summer. She wrote a great article every industry participant should read imo: In The Trenches: What Sweden Taught Me About the Future of Racquet Sports. Excellent work!

In the same context, I recommend you read what Southern California Racquet Sports Leader Alec Horton posted on his LinkedIn page:
Luxury Racquet Clubs Are at a Crossroads.

Alec writes, “What used to be enough: Beautiful facilities, prestige, club tradition, isn’t enough anymore. Member expectations are changing fast. Tennis, Pickleball, padel, wellness integration, and smart tech aren’t trends. They’re now the baseline.
The clubs that win the next decade won’t be the biggest, they’ll be the boldest.

Racquet Retail Business For Sale in Los Angeles, California

A good friend of mine is selling her Love Love Tennis Boutique in Beverly Hills, close to Rodeo Drive. Scroll down for the opportunity. She provided all the specifics in the offer and should be interesting for anyone wanting to acquire a fully built-out, three-story tennis/pickleball/padel retail business with custom fashion, racquet stringing, jewelry, and a whole lot more.

Hello, USTA, Wake Up

Check out this invitation to an August 16 tennis event in New York City I found on Instagram. Click on the image to get the audio message.

Why am I asking the USTA to wake up? Look at the messaging and the design this young woman deploys. Compare that to the usual drab and ultra-boring USTA messaging. I’m suggesting to the USTA Board: Hire this woman immediately! Pay her whatever she’ll ask. Let her guide you to a new marketing campaign that can actually excite people.

Hello, USTA, Wake Up

Did I hear that right on the At The Net Podcast with AJ Chabria and Craig Bell on July 28? Guest Matt Knoll said that D1 College Tennis has lost 18 teams since the spring this year. And the USTA is sitting idly by. Proves to me what I’ve been saying for years is correct: USTA executives are only SAYING they support College Tennis. In reality, they think it’s a waste of time, and they only want to actively support and train players who DON’T go to College. Prove me wrong.

We have a lot of good content from our excellent lineup of writers this month. However, I want to point out an author new to Racket Business. Will Persson’s article “Padel Is Not the Next Pickleball and That’s a Good Thing (Inside the push and pull behind padel’s growth) is spot on. I am also observing new padel clubs in my vicinity where I rarely see anyone playing. All that glitters is not gold in the padel business. Check out his article here.

I sincerely hope you find value in the August issue of Racket Business. Our aim is to provide you with insights and strategies that will contribute to the growth and success of your business in the competitive racquet sports industry.

Town Hall - The Hire Standard - Certifications, Member Updates & Racquet Sports Careers

With RSPA CEO Brian Dillman and
RSPA President Trish Faulkner

YOUR RSPA NETWORK IS YOUR NET WORTH!

Brian Dillman

The invitation read: In this impactful session, RSPA CEO Brian Dillman and President Trish Faulkner share critical updates to help you grow your racquet sports career and stay ahead in our evolving industry.

Here’s what you’ll learn in this Town Hall:

  • Certification Pathways Expansion - Discover how RSPA is making it easier to get certified across tennis, pickleball, padel, squash, and platform tennis – all under one membership. Expand your offerings, grow your income, and future-proof your career.

  • New Member Benefits & Professional Support - Learn about exclusive benefits, including discounts from Tennis Warehouse, Dunlop, and Selkirk, liability insurance options, business and leadership training, and upcoming programs designed to support your personal and professional development.

  • Strategic Partnerships & Industry Growth - Hear about our expanding partnerships with leading brands and organizations, bringing you the resources you need to deliver excellence on and off the court.

  • The RSPA Vision for the Future - Understand how our 2025 Strategic Plan is elevating Membership Development, Partnership Development, Brand Strength, Value Enhancement, and Organizational Excellence to serve you better.

One of the goals of this webinar was to provide members with clarity about where our industry is going. Brian Dillman talked about the growth the industry is experiencing: Racquet Sports is a $6 billion industry! We have 25 million Tennis players, 19 million Pickleball players, Padel is growing, Platform Tennis numbers are up, and even Squash is growing. “This growth is truly exciting for us. We have tons of wins this year. Membership is at an all-time high. Tennis sign-ups increased 23%. Pickleball is up 27%. New member applications are up 21%. We are really happy with those numbers.”

Brian also talked about new partnerships, like with GPTCA/ATP Tour (Segal Institute), DUPR Coach, RSPA accreditation by USA Pickle, and social media. “Our social media presence is up, way up, and we are expanding our international presence. More about this in Q1 of 2026.” He also encouraged members to create their own profiles in the newly launched Career Center.

RSPA: ONE MEMBERSHIP - FIVE SPORTS!

(Tennis, Pickleball, Padel, Platform Tennis, Squash)

Brian Dillman, Trish Faulkner

Trish Faulkner went to the International Pickleball Convention in Ft. Lauderdale and talked about the upcoming World Pickleball Cup at The FORT in the same town. (see our EVENTS page). Trish reported that the RSPA now has 25 Pickleball Coach Developers and the number of Padel Developers is also growing. She joined Brian in emphasizing that with one RSPA membership, you have access to other racquet sports if that’s what your goal is.

The Q+A started off with one provocative question: “Is the USTA our competitor?” Trish’s answer: “Not at the moment. We work with the USTA’s sectional leadership, and our strengths are in membership, organization, and certification. It’ll take the USTA a long time to reach that level of professionalism.”

Brian Dillman emphasized that half of our industry is unregulated. Competition from the USTA side is good because it gets more trained coaches on the courts. He also mentioned that 70% of private clubs now offer more than one racquet sport. His mantra: “Your RSPA Network is Your Net Worth! Use it. We all want to grow the sport, and we are pulling in this together.”

Brian also touched on…

  • Insurance for members (LIG Marketplace) and the fact that RSPA offers good and inexpensive SAM Insurance. (Reach out to their office!)

  • New website: rspa.net

  • High Schools: Many sections are already working with high schools. RSPA plans to work more closely with high schools and coaches in the future.

  • College Tennis: “We need to advocate more for college tennis.” RSPA members are being asked to host college tennis at their facilities.

  • WRC ‘25 Hawaii: Theme is “Rebranding You” - reinvent yourself every year so you don’t fall behind.
Streaming from Hawaii will be delayed by one day.
    Embracing the “Island Theme.”

  • WRC ‘26 will be in Dallas, Texas

  • WRC ‘27 will be in Orlando, Florida

CourtReserve Spark Webinar on July 24, 2025

What’s New in CourtReserve?

The invitation read: Join our team as we walk through new features released in July 2025! Running a club means juggling endless details — from event registrations to member payments and the day-to-day systems that keep everything moving. This latest update is designed to lighten that load. With flexible team-based registration, network-wide memberships, new payment options, and thoughtful user experience improvements, these updates help reduce manual work, improve the member experience, and give your team more control.

My take: The fact that CourtReserve currently has almost 2,000 clubs as clients makes me happy! Not that their ad in Racket Business had anything to do with it. But it’s Tim & Ashley and their fantastic team working tiredlessly to improve and market their product. I had personally experienced How good of a customer service experience they provide: Second to none! And I guess their customers also spread the word. That’s what I call a win-win situation.

I promised myself to one day participate in one of their ‘Catalyst Day’ training and information events. Regardless, if you are a CourtReserve User or want to become one, just listen to what they just released and how they do all this. Nice!

56 minutes of excellent information - not only for CourtReserve customers!

THINGS THAT MAKE ME GO HMMMM…

USTA Roundup: After Captain Sherr abandoned the good ship USTA, will he succeed at the NY Mets? Was Craig Morris demoted? Turnaround at the USTA Southern California? The Wisdom of Don Javier…

USTA Roundup

After Captain Sherr abandoned the good ship USTA, will he succeed at the NY Mets?

Upon careful analysis of press releases from both the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and the New York Mets, it appears that Lew Sherr's tenure as USTA CEO for the past 3 years and 3 months may have involved presenting potentially misleading information. There is a possibility that this approach could continue in his new role as President of Business Operations for the Mets.

It is plausible that Sherr attracted the attention of Mets owners, Steve and Alexandra Cohen, based on the same questionable statistics that he and his predecessors at the USTA have been utilizing for years. These figures include:

  • 25 million tennis players in the U.S. - Unverified

  • Substantial growth during the COVID-19 pandemic - Misleading

  • Projection of 35 million tennis players by 2035 - Extremely Unrealistic

A critical question arises: Who will inform the Cohen family about these potentially inflated figures? Additionally, it's worth considering whether Sherr's departure from the USTA Board was influenced by his public admission that the 4.8 million individuals who took up tennis during the COVID-19 pandemic had already left the sport. This statement, while most likely accurate, may have been intended for internal discussion rather than public disclosure.

The USTA Board members might have hoped that this information would not gain traction in the sports media. However, as industry analysts, it is our responsibility to scrutinize and report on such developments.

The relationship between the USTA and major racquet sports publications is complex and often governed by unwritten agreements. These arrangements typically ensure that publications maintain a positive narrative about the USTA in exchange for continued advertising revenue. As a result, critical or potentially negative information about the USTA is rarely (or never) published in mainstream tennis magazines.

This mutually beneficial arrangement between the USTA and sports media outlets creates a nicely controlled information environment within the tennis industry. Consequently, readers seeking comprehensive, unbiased coverage of tennis-related issues may need to explore alternative sources for a more complete picture of the sport's landscape.

Coming back to my original question about the chances of Lew Sherr succeeding as President, Business Operations of the NY Mets, my answer is maybe not. I can’t see that organization believing bogus numbers and BS predictions for the future. But I do wish him all the best.

Was Craig Morris demoted?

Over the past decade of curating and publishing racquet sports information, a consistent pattern has emerged within the United States Tennis Association (USTA). The organization appears to have a policy of internal reassignment rather than termination for underperforming executives, with rare exceptions at the highest levels of leadership.

This practice has been observed across various levels of management, with only the Chief Executive position seeming to be exempt from this unwritten rule. Notable examples include Mike Dowse and Lew Sherr, both of whom departed from their roles as top executives. The case of Kurt Kamperman, who held a position just below the highest rank, remains an anomaly in this pattern.

Interestingly, there were instances where the organizational hierarchy appeared to be inverted, with some observers noting that Gordon Smith seemed to report to Kamperman, despite holding a nominally superior position. This observation highlights the complexity of the nature of leadership dynamics within the USTA's leadership structure.

An examination of Craig Morris, a notable executive in tennis administration, reveals several insights that confirm previous observations. Reports suggest that Morris joined the United States Tennis Association (USTA) with credentials that some industry insiders questioned. There were unconfirmed rumors that Tennis Australia may have been relieved by his departure, though this information remains unverified.

A USTA insider told me last month, “Morris is only spending our money. Zero achievements.”

Anonymous

During Morris's tenure as Chief Executive of Community Tennis at the USTA, a number of programs and initiatives faced significant challenges. This pattern of difficulties provides context for understanding the complexities of his leadership:

NET GENERATION - By far not the success that was promised.
SERVE TENNIS - Took forever to work, not mobile-friendly, and lots of quirks.
WORLD TENNIS NUMBER - Hyped-up bunch of hot air, that’s all.

While it's important to note that not all of these challenges can be directly attributed to Morris's leadership, they collectively paint a picture of the obstacles faced during his time at the USTA. This case study serves as a valuable learning opportunity for future sports administrators and highlights the importance of thorough vetting and clear communication in executive appointments within major sports organizations.

In the most recent organizational restructuring, Community Tennis was dissolved and its functions were integrated into a newly formed group of departments called Participation & Play. Contrary to expectations, Craig Morris was not appointed to lead this new group. Instead, the Board recruited an external candidate, Michael McGoohan, who was appointed as CEO of Participation & Play. Concurrently, Morris was assigned the role of CEO for USTA Coaching. Here’s what it looks like on the USTA’s Executive Staff webpage:

Coaching

Chief Executive Officer, USTA Coaching: Craig Morris
Managing Director, Head of Business Development & Operations: Megan Rose
Senior Director, Accreditation & Certification: Craig Jones
Director, Experiential Learning: Chris Michalowski
Director, Community Education & Parent Support: Karl Davies

Based on industry analysis, it appears the USTA may have presented the coaching and certification segment as the primary growth driver for the future. However, experience suggests that executive-driven strategies within the USTA often face challenges in practical implementation.

While the focus on coaching and certification could potentially yield positive results, it is prudent to approach such projections with a good dose of scepticism. The USTA's track record in executing strategic initiatives warrants a thorough evaluation of the plan's feasibility and potential obstacles.

To ensure a comprehensive assessment, it would be beneficial to:

  • Analyze historical data on similar USTA initiatives

  • Evaluate market demand for expanded coaching and certification programs

  • Consider potential technological disruptions in the tennis education sector

  • Assess the USTA's capacity to effectively manage and scale this growth area

Turnaround at the USTA Southern California?

No, it’s not all negative when it comes to reporting from USTA Southern California. Examples: We had good things to say about the Director of Community Tennis, Esther Hendershott, a fine individual. We also congratulated ED Kronemann on the improved 2023 financials, which earned them a significantly improved 4-Star rating.

And now there is another positive sign that things may be going better at that once-leading USTA section. For the first time in the section’s 138-year history, a woman became Board President. Wow. I bet the old guard around Bob Kramer et al had to swallow hard seeing that happening, haha. I think it’s high time these guys step back and let younger people (especially women) take control.

Bravo, USTA SoCal. (See LA Times article)

The Wisdom of Don Javier…

I used to sometimes compare noted USTA critic Javier Palenque’s efforts with Miguel de Cervantes’ character “tilting at windmills” in the early ‘1700s ground-breaking novel Don Quixote of La Mancha. Wikipedia writes thatMiguel de Cervantes Saavedra was a Spanish writer widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language and one of the world's pre-eminent novelists.”

I’m saying, who knows, maybe “Don Javier” will also one day be regarded as one of the world’s pre-eminent writers who truly holds a powerful NGB’s feet to the fire, day in and day out.

When Javier’s LinkedIn post The 35-Million Player Illusion: How the USTA’s Lies Are Killing Tennis and Entrepreneurship came out on July 31st, I took notice because I have also described former USTA CEO Lew Sherr’s rather ludicrous “35 by 35” announcement as an illusion.

One paragraph stood out to me that displays the real wisdom of Don Javier:

“The sport is demographically lopsided, tailored to aging suburban elites with dwindling engagement among youth and minorities. The costs are prohibitive: racquets, shoes, court fees, and coaching. Coaching, by the way, is becoming a dying profession—with no pipeline, no incentives, and aging practitioners (the average age of a coach in the USA is 65+). Facility startup costs are astronomical. ROI? Laughable. You see, if I were mistaken, you would read headlines like: "Serena just bought so and so club, or Federer and Agassi team up to own XYZ event, but you hear and see old tennis stars invest in padel and pickleball. So, to those who disagree with me, these are facts that you cannot avoid. I am sadly correct.”

I highlighted Javier’s conclusion. Fascinating! It really made me go hmm…

What on earth is going on with RacketPro?

Is Racket Pro Imploding?

Racket Pro started out so promising with Dan Santorum and Collin Johns. Now I’m hearing that people didn’t want to move to the new Maryland HQ? Hu?

Look at the RacketPro MY TEAM page: https://www.racketpro.org/#/our_team

Dan Santorum has departed. Says he's Freelance "Living the dream" on LinkedIn. He’s now working for the Director’s Club of America as their new Chief Relationship Officer. Unfortunately, he’s not taking my phone calls.

Inaki Balzola has also departed. After 31 years at the PTR, he only lasted 6 months at Racket Pro. Now he’s unemployed.

Paige Payne left her 12-year PTR job for RacketPro and now she's back at the PTR after only 13 months.

Bic Hauser doesn't even mention RacketPro on his LinkedIn page.

Collin Johns has removed all RacketPro data from his LinkedIn page and he’s now Global Brand Ambassador for Dill Dinkers.

What on earth is going on there?
